CFB Shilo Overview Military presence in Southwestern Manitoba dates back to 1910 with the establishment of Sewell Camp located approximately 10 km north of present day Shilo. Permanent construction in the area we know today as CFB Shilo started in 1932 under a depression-era government relief program. The Army started conducting its first training in 1934 with mounted artillery and machine gun units, followed by infantry units a year later. Although initially used as a summer camp only, starting in 1942 Camp Shilo was in continuous use and became a permanent year-round establishment. At present, CFB Shilo is a ground, artillery and mechanized troop training base with approximately 1400-1500 military personnel and 438 civilian employees.
