Statistics Canada, 2006 Census Semi-custom Area Profile

The labour force in the rural areas may become increasingly important to the Economic Region as a whole. Data from the 2006 Census of Agriculture indicates that a growing proportion of farmers in Canada are working off the farm, compared to 2001. Over 48% of Canadian farm operators in 2006 reported working off-farm, compared to just under 45% in 2001. For the first time in 2006, the proportion of female operators who worked off farm reached 50% (while about 48% of male operators worked off farm).

More than one fifth of farmers in Canada reported working more than 40 hours a week off farm in 2006, which is an increase from 2001.

The trend of increasing percentages of farmers working off the farm is seen in every province from Quebec west (though Saskatchewan and Alberta had the largest increases).

Note: Owing to rounding used by Statistics Canada, the total may differ from the sum of males and females (2006 Census)

In the Region’s Towns and Villages, slightly lower percentages of the population fall in the 15 to 24 years, and 25 to 44 years ranges, and a somewhat higher share fall in the 65 years and over group than in the Economic Region as a whole. In the Rural Areas, a greater share of the population falls in the 45 to 64 years range, and a lower percentage is aged 65 and over than in the Economic Region as a whole. The age structure of the towns, villages and rural areas in the Economic Region may be an important factor in the labour force available to the city of Brandon itself.
