Labour Force Activity (15+ Years) 2006 employment participation data indicates that Brandon has 21,935 employed and 1,270 unemployed residents in the 15 years and over labour force. Unemployment rates of 5.6% for males and 5.3% for females are evident in 2006. Based on 2006 Census figures, the City of Brandon has a 69% participation rate of employment for all persons 15 years of age and over.
Participation rates are lower in the economic region towns and villages than in the economic region as a whole. This may in part relate to the higher proportion of the population aged 65 and over in this sub-region. In the rural areas, the participation rates were higher and the unemployment rates lower than in the economic region as a whole.
Note: The Participation rate measures what percentage of the population 15 years and over were employed or unemployed (i.e. actively seeking employment, on temporary leave or about to start a new job) In total, an estimated 75% of males and 62.5% of females 15 years and over participated in the labour force in the Southwest Economic Region. Unemployment rates were 4.4% for both males and females in the economic region.
